Honestly I was prepared to be bored by a presentation by a surgical instrument company. The presenter, Dan Farley of Thomson Surgical, started the presentation with this photo. It had my attention, and was an interesting talk. I’m coming to realize Traverse City has always been an entrepreneurial town, and lately companies like this are expanding the economy beyond tourism and cherries. The live recording is on the event hosts page, TCnewtech.org, and they host a popular monthly tech meetup at the Opera House in downtown TC.
There were four presentations that followed and all were interesting new and established healthcare related companies. The presentation that stood out the most was Katie Horvath of Munson/Cowell Family Cancer Center. Essentially Katie, through her own experience with breast cancer, saw the need for better services for cancer patients. Her leadership has lead to receiving an award in Washington DC for developing a program that other centers are using as a model.
Lastly, in keeping with the entrepreneurial theme, an exciting announcement was made that has been in the works for some time. Russell Schindler, who established TCNewTech, announced the launch of a startup/tech incubator called Startology. It is quite a significant accomplishment to find backers and start an incubator. I look forward to seeing the impact this has on the tech scene in Northern Michigan.
